Physics Department Goals

  1. Achievement of Research 1 status.
  2. Doubling of the external funding (for research, curriculum development and outreach) in the next 3 years.
  3. Establishment of federally funded centers with emphasis in local strengths in materials physics (for example MRSEC and EFRC) and planetary science.
  4. Establishment of similar state funded centers of excellence through collaboration with other Florida universities.
  5. Full realization of a forward-looking undergraduate program intermixing traditional physics with research-based pedagogy.
  6. Conversion of all traditional introductory physics laboratories to activity-based learning studios in the next 1-3 years.
  7. Further integration of research and education in the curriculum.
  8. Doubling of the number of majors in the next 3 –years.
  9. Hiring of additional quality faculty to strengthen further programs in existing areas of departmental emphasis and to improve the faculty-to-student ratio in the department.
  10. Recruitment of increasingly excellent domestic and international graduate students.
  11. An increase in the number of graduate students to 100 within the next 2 years.
  12. An increase the number of graduate teaching assistants by 12 within the next 2 years, in order to enhance the quality of undergraduate education.
  13. An offering of several more service/GEP courses which enhance our visibility and student credit hours.
  14. Maintenance of the high quality of departmental staff through appropriate remunerations and other incentives.
  15. Strengthening of departmental IT, machine shop and experimental shared facility resources.
